True well-being extends beyond physical health to encompass both mental and emotional harmony. Traditional Chinese medicine’s deep understanding of the emotional aspect of health is what initially drew me to this medicine and it’s at the heart of my practice.
The connection between mental and physical health is very well understood in Western medicine as well. One example of this is the clear relationship between prolonged stress and many common health conditions. A heightened stress response has been linked to an array of health conditions, including cardiovascular issues, digestive problems, weakened immune function, sleep disturbances, anxiety, and depression.
The tools of traditional Chinese medicine offer a pathway to balance and emotional well-being. From a TCM perspective, acupuncture helps to regulate the flow of Qi (life force) within the body. When Qi moves freely and harmoniously, it fosters a state of balance and well-being. On the other hand, if there are blockages or imbalances in the flow of Qi, there may be symptoms of distress such as anxiety, depression, irritability or anger. Other mental or even physical symptoms may also arise.
